What Types of Specimens Are Stored in a Bio Bank

Bio bank is a sort of bank where biological materials like animals, plants and humans are collected, stored and distributed. Biological materials are researched and assessed over here in a proper systemized manner. It is a place for a source of advancement in scientific knowledge.

Human bodily substance like blood, DNA, cells and tissue are collected as samples from a large number of people to get genetic information related to their medical history, and lifestyle data are stored in this bank. The record is stored in bio bank to see from where the problem actually originates. Bio bank has the collection of both the samples and their data.

Various types of specimen can be found in bio banks, like surgical and transplant tissue, cancer or tumour tissue, cord blood or stem cell bank, blood bank having dried blood spots, body fluids (synovial, urine, sputum, bucaal scrapings and sperm), DNA and RNA bank, and cornea bank.

The types and purpose of samples in bio bank vary from one another. They are collected for different types of illness as cancer types and tumour bank. They are collected in connection with the clinical trials or public health surveys. The sampling and database are done after taking the ethical permission.

These specimens are investigated for various purposes like certain disorders. Tissue specimen, taken from certain DNA from the databases, provides an opportunity to the whole mechanism of a disease, and then the development of the drug for that particular disease and also the effect of that drug.

Today, different types of tissues are stored in these banks so that a disease can be analyzed with all its complexities and can be treated on modern technology. There are two types of tissues; one is surgical tissue and the other is transplant tissue. The security of genetic donors in these banks is anonymous, that is, they are given some code number instead of personal information.

These bio banks are known for transfusions. The "blood bank" collects blood from volunteers and donor for some sort of surgical inventions and transplantation. As in case of "eye bank", it is responsible for the collection and storage of cornea tissue and its transmission to other hospitals for transplantation. The "DNA bio bank" is responsible for storing blood samples so that the researcher can study the cause of disease and disclose its solution, so that people can lead a healthy life. Bio bank plays a significant role in the field of medical research today.

These banks also monitor the problem arises after outbreak of a certain disease or pollution. These banks collect cancer samples, normal samples and non-neoplastic diseases. They have both solid and liquid tissue. Solid tissue includes (surgical resections, image-guided biopsies, bone marrow biopsies and endoscopic biopsies) and liquid tissue includes (peripheral blood, genomic DNA, plasma and Serum).

Bio specimens are collected from blood and tissue samples of healthy people and also from cancer patients with their consent to diagnose cancer. Medical and personal information of the patients and the donor is also collected for the link up of the disease. The specimen which is collected from surgery is used for the research and study about that particular disease.
